Mayor Mike Wasserman has decided
to run for Santa Clara County Supervisor after years
of running small businesses, coaching sports and
serving as a councilman and Mayor of Los Gatos.
During his political career Mike has proven
that balancing budgets and maintaining high quality
public services can be done when the focus is on the
people you represent. Mike wants to bring his local
government experience of promoting public private
partnerships and job creation to the Santa Clara
County Board of Supervisors.
Education & Professional
Business & Personal Background
|
Mayor Mike has a degree in
Psychology from the University of
Southern California, is a Registered
Tax Preparer and a Certified
Financial Planner. After getting his
degree from USC in 1980, Mike
married Kim Currie his college
sweetheart. They are happily married
for over 29 years and have two
children, daughter Nicole 22 and son
Sean 20. |

Mike and Kim moved back
to Mike’s hometown of Los Gatos in 1982 and this is
where they have lived and worked together for the
last 27 years.

|
Mike’s
professional background over the
last 29 years has consisted of
managing a national retailer, then
owning and operating different
businesses in Santa Clara County,
including a data processing company,
a sports memorabilia store, a
property management company, and a
financial planning firm.
These endeavors gave Mike
valuable hands on experience in
negotiations, investments, being
a commercial and residential
tenant, being a landlord, being
a homeowner, being a business
owner, property rights, hiring
and managing employees, dealing
with business taxes and
licenses, adjusting budgets to
deal with fluctuating economic
times -- all the while allowing
Mike to talk with and most
importantly, listen to,
the thoughts, desires and
concerns of hundreds of
thousands of citizens about
these and other issues.
Before
Mike ran for public office he
coached more than 300 kids on 25
youth teams over a 10 year period.
He was a Community Read-In
participant, created the Zero
Tolerance for Violence in Youth
Sports program in LG Little League
and has contributed in numerous ways
to over 100 different, non-profit
organizations. |
In
recognition of all his involvement, Mike has been
voted “The Best Youth Sports Coach” AND
“The Best Volunteer” AND “The Best Civic
Minded Citizen.”
Mike
Wasserman received the Certificate of
Appreciation from the Los Gatos / Monte Sereno
Police Department and the "Thumbs Up Award"
from the Community Foundation in recognition of his
community involvement, passion and accomplishments.
A 50 year resident of Santa Clara County, Mayor
Wasserman has the qualifications and experience to
lead on the Board of Supervisors. Mike is running
to succeed Supervisor Don Gage who after 14 years
will be termed out of office.
In 2002, the San Jose Mercury News and the Santa
Clara County Firefighters endorsed Mike and he won
the election, as 58% of the people voted for him.
In 2006, the Los Gatos Weekly Times and Los Gatos
Daily endorsed Mike (the Mercury didn't do
endorsements that year) and he won that election,
too -- this time with an all time record number of
votes, as 72% of the people voted for Mike --
confirming they liked Mike and the job he was doing!
Mike has served on 29
local and regional committees. Some of those
committees included: the Association of Bay Area
Governments, the Guadalupe West Valley Water Shed
Committee, the Santa Clara County Cities
Association, the Santa Clara County Emergency
Preparedness Council, the Santa Clara County VTA
CODE Committee, the Community Against Substance
Abuse, Safety and Health is First Coalition, the
West Valley Mayors and Managers Committee, the
Downtown Streetscape Committee, the Chamber of
Commerce Liaison, and the League of California
Cities (Penin. Div.).
Mike has helped
create and/or enhance numerous projects,
including the formation of a Youth Commission, a
“Town Hall in the Neighborhood” program, a new
police station, a Community Bus program,
additional soccer fields, the multi award
winning, nationally recognized, Alive and Loving
Life Project, and the development of a new, LEED
certified library -- all while maintaining a
balanced budget and not reducing services.
In 2004 he created a
project he called “Community Unity” –
whereby service minded individuals, in clubs,
churches, schools, and businesses joined forces
to work together to help Seniors, children,
parks and trails. This program won a Helen
Putnam Award from the League of California
Cities.
In late 2008 Mike launched a community wide
outreach effort to educate the public about
Project Cornerstone and the importance of
Developmental Assets for young people. To date,
this effort has reached more than 18,000 adults
in 70 service clubs, faith organizations, sports
leagues and businesses! For his efforts,
Mike received an Asset Champions Award from the
Project Cornerstone organization and a
Certificate of Appreciation from the San Jose
Junior League.
Mayor Wasserman is
taking his years of business, community activism
and local government experiences and know how to
the County level, as he runs for election to the
Board of Supervisors in June 2010.
